Diamond Bar is a small and quiet city located in Los Angeles County. At the time of the 2010 census the population was 55,132. This was down from 56,117 during the recording of the 2000 census. The city is named after the “”diamond over a bar”” branding iron that was registered in 1918 by ranch owner Frederick Lewis.
The city itself was officially incorporated in the spring of 1989. It is located in eastern Los Angeles County, in the southeastern portion of the San Gabriel Valley. Diamond Bar is about 28 miles to the east of downtown L.A. Neighboring cities include Rowland Heights, Pomona, and Walnut. Diamond Bar also lies adjacent to the Inland Empire area of California, with Chino Hills directly to its east, and directly to the south of Diamond Bar lie the Orange County cities of Brea and La Habra.
The city is located at the junction of the Orange and Pamona freeways. The city is mainly residential, and also has shopping centers mixed in throughout. The city features a L.A. County public golf course. It also has the first hydrogen fueling station ever built in Southern California, located near the South Coast Air Quality Management District building. According to the most recent 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, the city has an area of 15 square miles, with no significant bodies of water located in the city boundaries. Diamond Bar has a population density of 3,732 people per square mile.
Both the 57 and 60 highways run through the city. The Highway 10 is located just to the north of the city, and the Highway 71 is just to its east. The city’s main streets include Diamond Bar Boulevard, Golden Springs Drive, Grand Avenue, and Pathfinder Road. Like many of the surrounding San Gabriel Valley cities such as Arcadia and San Marino, Diamond Bar there has been an influx of Asian American citizens, primarily of Taiwanese, Filipino, Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese descent.
This trend began taking place in the 80s. Attracted to the perceived prestige of a Diamond Bar address and the area’s prestigious schools, many affluent Asian Americans commuting out of the area for work have moved to Diamond Bar. Asian-oriented businesses have also begun to appear in the city as well.
